Summer 2008 Union Station Advocates Picnic!

Union Station Advocates is organizing a picnic for its 100+ and growing membership. Mark your calendars for Thursday, August 14, 5:30 - 8:00 PM at Denver's City of Cuernavaca Park to join fellow enthusiasts of Union Station for Brothers BBQ, wine, beer, and music. All are welcome! Cost of the picnic is just $10 for members... and for non-members, if you join now (August 5 through August 14), you'll get free admission to the picnic with your new membership!

If you're not a member, please go to the Membership page and sign up! For members, you'll receive an Evite from us to RSVP, and you can go to our Membership page and use the "Event Registration" link to pre-pay your $10 with your credit card.

To get to City of Cuernavaca Park, you have two options:

From LoDo or the Riverfront Park area of the Central Platte Valley, go to the Denver SkatePark at 19th and Little Raven, go across the bridge, and turn right onto Rockmont Drive. The park will be on your right.

From 15th Street, you can also turn down Platte Street, go past the Highland Bridge and keep going until you get to the park. At 19th Street, Platte Street turns into Rockmont Drive. Click here for a map.

See you all on the 14th!

USA - May 15 Meeting a Big Success!

A full-house crowd of over 60 people attended USA's first public meeting on Thursday, May 15 at the Oxford Hotel. Our thanks to Jason Longsdorf, senior planner at Parsons Brinckerhoff responsible for developing the Union Station Master Plan, for his comprehensive overview of the master planning and environmental impact statement process at Union Station.

We'd also like to thank Jim Havey of Havey Productions for his passion and energy for his proposed video project on Union Station and for partnering with Union Station Advocates on that endeavor.

Finally, the highlight of the meeting was a very interesting short lecture on the key elements of great public spaces by Jeremy Németh, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Planning and Design at the University of Colorado Denver and a recap by the four student teams of their design concepts for the Wynkoop Plaza area at Union Station.

Here are a couple of photos from the May 15 meeting (click to view at full size):

The four student design concepts will be uploaded to the Resources > Reports & Studies page soon. You may also view them at the Planning Studio's project website at www.cudenver.edu/dus.

Union Station Advocates - May 2008 Project Update Meeting!

Please join us for an exciting Union Station Project Update Meeting on:

Thursday, May 15, 2008

4:00 - 5:30 PM

Oxford Hotel, Theatre Room, 17th & Wazee

Here's the agenda for the May meeting:

Union Station Project Update

The project is quickly moving from the negotiation phase to the solid planning phase and much is happening, including the selection of the landscape architecture firm that will be working hand in hand with the lead designer, SOM, to design the public spaces.  We want to make you aware of the future schedule and how you can actively participate in this important phase.

USA Video Project

Union Station Advocates is working with Jim Havey of Havey Productions to create a short film to be used to build awareness of the historical significance of the project and to share personal experiences of the station with the community.  Jim Havey and Nathan Church will brief the membership on the project as well as their more substantial video project on Denver Union Station.

UCD College of Architecture and Planning Union Station Planning Studio Wrap Up

A graduate planning studio that occurred this spring specifically focused on the public space at Wynkoop Plaza.  We will hear from the students and their professor a summary of their final plans, feedback from the public presentation, as well as their impression of the process, project and what they have learned

Planning Exercise

We will spend the last few minutes engaging with our members on concepts for potentially “branding” the public spaces at Denver Union Station.  Many other nationally recognized places have successfully incorporated these messages with their identity, such as Pioneer Courthouse Square as Portland’s “Living Room.”  When the selected designers begin conceptual planning for these important future spaces, it will be of benefit to them to have ideas such as these from the community.

Post Meeting Happy Hour

Immediately following our formal meeting, we will commence with an informal gathering in the Oxford Hotel’s Cruise Room for a cocktail or two.  If you can, please join us and get to know your fellow USA members.

There is a charge of $10 per person to cover the cost of light refreshments and miscellaneous expenses, payable by cash, check or credit card at the door. A cash bar for adult beverages will also be available.

Please RSVP if you plan to attend by emailing godbey@streetcarstables.com so we have an accurate number for the refreshments.

Non-Members are welcome too!  Please invite anyone you think may be interested.  Hope to see you there!
